Thank you everyone for commenting and the kind words. I was actually a little bit surprised when I heard I got in as a semi-finalist, I was redoing a lot of these old noir pieces and figured I might as well place it in the contest. I am still not satisfied with new version and plan to edit a few more things.

If you like these please stay tuned as I plan on making more of these black and white noir-styled illustrations and eventually have them available as prints.

Congratulations to everyone who made in the semi-finalist round. For those who didn't, I would just say keep trying and have a good attitude about it. I've entered in probably a dozen contests (Skribble, Barnabas, Gears of War, Darkness II, just to name a few) and haven't won in a single one, save for making into it a few semi-finalist rounds. Of course like anyone there were a couple times I didn't quite agree with the judges, but just like everyone we are entitled to our own opinions and sharing inflammatory statements doesn't change the judgements and doesn't improve the atmosphere at Deviant. It may sound cliched but just kind grinding and pushing yourself. Draw and sketch until your hands and neck hurts, rest, then draw some more.

both are extremely good
but I can see an improvement in the second one, so keep up the good work!

I'm missing the red color in the new one. The first has a weirdly textured background, but I think the guy next to the girl looks better here, than in the new one.

Am I making sense?

honestly, both kinda look really close to the same, pose and anatomy wise, but the grayscale in the second picture flows a lot better together ^^

Before is very good too, but the newer one is so much more effective.
